The presenter began teaching children to program computers nearly 40 years ago, led professional development in the first 1:1 “laptop schools" in 1990, created one of the world’s first online graduate programs in 1998, and co-authored what has become known as the bible of the maker movement in schools. Despite being at the vanguard of interventions that may now be considered “on-trend,” Gary will make the case that innovation is the wrong objective for education, complete with perverse incentives, that do little to make the world a better place for kids. In this lively, provocative, and heartfelt presentation, Dr. Stager will share different scenarios for the future of education - ones that respect history, recognize the power of computing to amplify human potential, and prepare children to thrive in an uncertain future.
