Are we preparing students for 2019 or 2030?
The exponential digitization and convergence of numerous technological fields has started the 4th industrial revolution.  This digital transformation will bring paradigmatic changes and increasingly exponential rates, as digital platforms usher in a new economic reality. We now have pocket devices that can perform 11 trillion operations a second and hold 11.8 billion transistors on a single chip. This year we will make millions of these devices adding up to trillions and trillions of transistors. The shift will be profound.
People all around the globe are faced with almost invisible forces that are altering paradigms around work, and by extension education.  The automation of work as a result of this convergence has intensified labor force transformations and it is estimated that approximately 2 billion jobs will be lost to automation by 2030, and give rise to new unprecedented opportunities to reimagine life on earth.
Innovation in education is the key component linked to the productivity of a country and the quality of life experienced by its citizens in a digitally transformed world. Preparing students to thrive in the 4th industrial revolution is not an academic conversation. It is an urgent one that requires creativity, investment and an appreciation that the future of education is not technology led. The future of education is human led, purpose driven and technology augmented. Are we preparing students for 2019 or 2030?
