Creative Empowerment: From Why to How

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

This is a creative, experiential 1.5 hour workshop that will take place over zoom. Participants will learn a framework for strategically using short arts activities to engage the whole person. Participants will also increase their confidence in their own creativity and their ability to bring the arts into their teaching regardless of previous experience.

The objectives are to:
1. Learn ways to develop creative learning communities where young people feel safe to explore their inner lives and build connections with others.
2. Increase participants belief in their own creative abilities and their capacity to lead arts-based activities even if they have no previous arts experience.
3. Gain a tool-box of easy-to-lead arts activities that teachers can immediately use in their classroom.

I will begin with a community building process participants can use to develop a culture of safety and connection in their classroom, after-school program, or other school-based event, demonstrating how zoom can be used to accomplish these aims in virtual learning spaces. From there I will work with a series of imagination games that release the body, open the mind, and engage learners’ intrinsic motivation so they are ready and eager to learn. Depending on time, we will also present ways to use metaphor, image, creative writing, and quick performances to fully engage students/youth and nurture their inner lives.
