World Building: What human values to you admire most? [A Teacher training session on building authentic characters]

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

In this workshop we introduce ‘character’ building through the qualities of learners’ most admired heroes. By starting with the rudiments of what we value most about people, this teacher training session is immediately interactive because we dive right in to find what kind of character you want to build based on what inner qualities drive the people you admire.
This is a great first or second class compatible with any creative writing class that needs original characters for their story, screenplay, role-playing game, etc.
As a teacher you can use this activity in large or small groups.

I will lead you through the class and give pointers of how you can change and enhance many elements to fit your course needs.

Main basic skills used:

• active listening
• adaptability
• communication
• creative writing
• critical thinking
• goal setting
• improvisation
• literacy
• pattern recognition
• perspective enhancement
• skill-connoisseurship
• storytelling

Main advanced skills used:

• driving purpose
• empowerment
• information gathering
• self-validation

The idea is to explore our own inner resources to tap into and investigate the strong qualities in your own mind's heroes. Luckily, everyone is different! So, you can count on diversity to give your group a range of different qualities to discuss.

This class is loaded with ways to explore what heroes are, because we highlight heroic elements found outside stereotypes in everyone from musicians to activists, athletes to inventors. There are several ways you can go about exploring learners’ character development. This is one in a 12-phase process to building a character that takes learners on a creative journey to enrich their writing experience. You can follow it or borrow from it all you like.
