[RE]LEARN 2020 - The Learning Innovation Festival

My objectives for this session are to consider the benefits of learning through doing projects related to nature and the environment, doing them in parallel (or with) others around the globe, and learning about each other. The more we know, the more we will care and reconsider our treatment of the planet. I would like to share with you STEM Ginger Education’s ideas to action these objectives.
The environment is of paramount importance and the need for living in a way that doesn’t jeopardise our planet’s well-being is essential ... and it’s not too late to change our ways. My studies in Natural Science, primarily Environmental Science and Oceanography, awakened in me a passion for the natural world and raised my awareness of the environmental catastrophe the human race is creating. After teaching English in different countries for many years and becoming more and more aware of a real need for a shift in education towards project learning and discovery, my already present desire to draw awareness to the environmental world became accelerated and focussed.
• A shift in habits is desperately needed for human and animal life to continue cohabiting on our planet. The more today’s children know and care, the more tomorrow’s politicians, cleaners, lawyers etc, will act in ways to benefit nature.
• A shift in education is needed to ensure all learning styles, all abilities, variations in cognition, and children from all backgrounds, have equal opportunities.
STEM Ginger Education aims to combine these necessary movements (in Education and environmental awareness), by drawing attention to the natural world, providing opportunities for children in different places to communicate and learn about other parts of the same planet. Skills such as critical thinking, hypothesising, evaluating, presenting, communicating in English (and much more) are used in the monthly Environmental Warriors projects and are invaluable in the wider world, setting young people up for a brighter future.
If you come to my session you will learn about The Environmental Warriors, the varied activities and, with the end of the pandemic not being in sight, I will also show you how these tasks and projects can be adapted, done by hand or online, leaving a lot of space for creativity and imagination. In addition, if you are not a mother-tongue English speaker and you would like a hand teaching through English, STEM Ginger Education offers workshops and courses in CLIL.
The session is aimed at educators that want to offer an environmental focus within their centres and younger people that want to learn about and take part in the Environmental Warriors.
