The Porn Conversation is a Nonprofit organisation that is redefining 'The Talk’ at home and sex education at schools by encouraging critical and educational conversations with parents, educators, and young people - beginning with the topic of porn. Not only does The Porn Conversation normalise talking about porn with young people, it guides adults on how to expand to other necessary themes such as anatomy and physiology, puberty and sexual development, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, consent and boundaries, sexual health, interpersonal violence, and online safety.

Comprehensive sex education has many positive effects, including increasing youth’s knowledge and improving their attitudes related to sexual and reproductive health and behaviours. Sex education is fundamental for young people’s development, yet it is absent in many schools. When sex education is provided at school, the educators are often ill-equipped to lead the course and the material is outdated. Although most parents agree that sex education is necessary, they fail to talk about sex at home. Oftentimes the message children and teens receive about sex is nonfactual and shame-inducing. It’s only natural that young people are curious about sex, and without access to age-appropriate and evidence-based information, they are left to learn about sex through what they find online, which in many cases, is porn. The online sex culture of today, is often aggressive and disturbing, and youth can easily misinterpret what they see online as realistic representations of sex and relationships.

In this session, we will explore how The Porn Conversation is redefining ‘The Talk’ and sex education as we know it - by providing a program that is sex-positive, comprehensive, and intersectional. Through the development of our Conversation Guides for parents and the Curriculum and Activity Guides for Educators, we have developed classroom and at-home material suitable for three different age demographics of students, 8-11, 12-15, and 16+. The Porn Conversation is continuing its growth and soon to be relaunching with Q&A’s, workshops, ambassador programs, animated videos, a chatbot and more!

We hope the audience of parents and educators will not only gain a greater understanding of the critical need to talk to young people about sex, but become acquainted with the free tools The Porn Conversation has to offer in order to initiate ‘The Talk’ at home or implement a Comprehensive Sex Education program at their schools.
